Today in England: Rain at last!!

Posted by Bola Egunjobi on May 7, 2011

Its raining at last!! Manna from heaven for the gardens.

Drink, grass, drink. Drink and be green again.

Nature is more powerful than a hose-pipe.

So put aside the bar-ber-ques and invite your friends indoors, or put it off till another day.

Today is for the grass to drink its fill and be healthy again.

The greener grass and brighter flowers will serve us well for many a future day.

So let it rain, oh yes, let it rain!

Shared Birthdays

Posted by Bola Egunjobi on October 16, 2009

I had a phone call from my friend Kazeem K. this morning. Kazeem is a great friend from my days at University. He called to wish me a happy birthday (which was a couple of days ago).

Talking to Kazeem, I remembered that I was wrong to think that no two people in my immediate acquaintance share the same birthday except me and my new nephew who was born this Wednesday. Kazeem’s son, now 16, was also born on 14th October.

Of course, I’ve always been aware of a few public people who also share my birthday, including Karyn White (the American R&B singer) and Steve Coogan (the British comedian – alias Alan Partridge) who were born in the same year as me, and others including: Sir Cliff Richard, Sir Roger Moore, Dwight D Eisenhower (34th President of the United States from Jan 20 1953 to Jan 20 1961), Usher Raymond (American R&B singer).

It is not surprising that anyone will share their birthday with many public people: there are just 365 days in a year, and 6 billion people alive today. So everyone of us shares our birth day & month with 100s of millions of others, and even our birth date (year, month & day) with a very lot of people. There are websites out there these days that will show you which public figures share your birthday.

The best one I found is History Orb which searches back to the year 1257(!) for 14th October and comes up with 240 results!!

Happy Birthday

Posted by Bola Egunjobi on October 14, 2009

It’s 9:43

As I sat down to work this morning I listened to my voicemails. The first was from my mum, left at 4.30am. That’s quite early, I thought, even if she is calling to wish me a happy birthday.

She sang “Happy Birthday” down the line, just like I had tried to do in my unmelodic voice on her birthday a couple of months ago. Hearing her sing brought a warm glow to my heart and a smile to my face.

Then she dropped the other news: my sister has had her baby. It’s a boy, and he shares my birthday!

I couldn’t help it, tears welled up in my eyes. I had wanted it to happen, but in a way that you want something without imposing your own wishes on other people – like it would be a nice thing to happen. I had sent the email message to my brothers last night: “OMG my new nephews going to share my birthday!”  Because the dates were so close. I picked up my mobile to call her husband, and there was his text message from 1.49am confirming the news.

That’s how my day’s started. How will it progress?

Happy 40th Birthday, Tunde

Posted by Bola Egunjobi on November 22, 2007

My brother Tunde turned 40 yesterday. That’s quite a landmark age. Thankfully, Tunde’s got all the major wheels in his life rolling along nicely in the right direction – at least as far as I can tell.

Thinking of Tunde always reminds me of when I studied a wonderful programme called the Sedona Method several years ago.

The method includes the mention of a continuum from absolute negative emotions to absolute positivity; Amongst the positive emotions, it considers PEACE to be the most positive state, preceded by ACCEPTANCE, which is in-turn preceded by COURAGE. I remember thinking at the time that I knew only one person in my life who was close to achieving PEACE – a devout christian friend who always wore a warm smile on her face and had the most pleasant things to say to everyone she encountered.

My brother Tunde, it occurred to me, is a man who has complete ACCEPTANCE and is transcending into PEACE. I considered that I, for my part, have a profound level of COURAGE and I felt a clear desire to attain ACCEPTANCE on the way to becoming PEACEFUL.

Okay, so this photo of Tunde
was taken 6 years ago!

It has been several years since I studied the Sedona Method, although I still have it on my bookshelf. Now Tunde has turned 40 and is still the most ACCEPTING person I know, and growing more PEACEFUL & calm. And me? My experiences over the years, especially in very recent times, have proven (to me) that I am a very COURAGIOUS being. I am now in ACCEPTANCE in many more areas of my life than ever, but I still struggle. And I am still focussed on PEACE.

But enough about me: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TUNDE. Keep some cake back for us, and put the champagne on ice. We’re coming to disturb your peace just a little bit this weekend.

Sunday Night

Posted by Bola Egunjobi on November 19, 2007

Its almost 1am on Monday morning.

I’ve spent most of Sunday working on Chellgrove’s accounts for the 3 months from September to November. I need to gather some important statistics on monthly costs but before I can do so I need to bring the records up-to-date. Very wisely, I stopped work at about 9pm and had some dinner. I watched some TV after dinner but could not resist writing a blog post for Chellgrove while watching the Spiderman movie on Channel 5.

I had intended to go to bed ontime tonight – no later than midnight – but formatting and tidying up on the Chellgrove blogpost took some time. And then I could not resist writing this quick entry for my own personal blog!

Last week and the weekend did not go very well. I now look on the time that I have spent blogging as a distraction from important work I need to do in other areas of Chellgrove’s business and my personal life. The blogging may yet produce positive results, but the other important things still remain undone!

It’s now 1am. I have spent 10 minutes writing this personal blogpost. I’m off to bed now so that I can have a productive Monday.

What a Day!

Posted by Bola Egunjobi on November 15, 2007

I went to bed at 5am on Thursday morning, having been up all night reading blogs on the Internet and joining a small handful of conversations on behalf of Chellgrove office chairs. I created Chellgrove’s own first blog on at 3am and then spent the next couple of hours formatting it and writing its first 2 posts.

I went to bed at 5am and was up again at 6am(!) to arrive at a Business Network meeting just in time at 7am. The sleepless night spoilt the whole of Thursday for me: I was so tired that I could not focuss clearly enough to get any serious other work done, so I spent the day reading blogs and joining a few more conversations on behalf of Chellgrove.

I had planned to go to bed early tonight so that I will have a good alert day tomorrow. But then I got the idea to create this personal blogat about 10pm, so here I go again creating, formatting and posting on a new blog late into the night.

But I will call it a day now. I have a meeting with my business coach on Friday, and possibly a Business Club meeting too. And I have some very specific product-pricing work to do for Chellgrove. Good night!
